Islamabad Scales Down Bike Lane Project to 10 KM Test Run

City managers have shifted their approach to Islamabad’s bicycle lane project, opting for a smaller, 10-kilometer pilot project instead of the original 374-kilometer plan.

This pilot will be along Khayaban-i-Iqbal Road, known locally as Margalla Road, stretching from sectors G-5 to F-10.

Earlier this year, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) initiated a large-scale bicycle track project worth Rs. 2.8 billion, but construction stopped after just 500 meters. The revised plan reflects the CDA’s focus on testing the concept before committing to a full-scale project.

CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa recently led a meeting to discuss the project’s new direction. He emphasized gradual implementation, noting that eco-friendly cycling tracks and facilities for electric bikes, including charging stations, would be included in the initial phase.

According to Mr. Randhawa, the primary goals of this project are to beautify Islamabad and provide residents with a sustainable transport option.

Phase I of the project will prioritize the development of cycling tracks on Margalla Road and in sectors F-6 and G-6. The CDA chairman has directed the engineering department to revise the cost estimates for this scaled-back track and submit them for final approval.

Initially, the CDA’s Development Working Party (CDA-DWP) approved a two-year plan with a Rs. 2.8 billion budget, intending to create bike lanes along major roads like Jinnah Avenue and other significant routes across 26 residential sectors. This plan also included the establishment of 150 parking areas for bicycles and e-bikes.
