Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken a landmark step for the journalist community, announcing the provision of plots to 3,200 journalists, as reported by 24NewsHD TV Channel on Thursday.
Maryam Nawaz has directed the Ministry of Information to immediately initiate the development of Journalist Colony Lahore Phase II, completing all legal processes to ensure the prompt allocation of plots to journalists.
In a meeting with Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari and CM Maryam Nawaz, I instructed her to expedite the procedures for Phase II of the Journalist Housing Scheme.
During the discussion, Maryam Nawaz emphasized, “Journalists and the government are like two wheels of the same vehicle; providing plots to journalists is not a favor but their right.”
She further stated that plots would be allocated based on merit and in compliance with all legal requirements.
According to a channel report, the Punjab Ministry of Information has decided to invite applications from journalists beyond those affiliated with the Lahore Press Club, with a formal advertisement expected within two to three days.
The Punjab government introduced the initial scheme of this kind in Lahore in 2004, during Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s tenure as Chief Minister. The housing colony was located near Harbanspura on Canal Road.
