After Vitara, Suzuki Has No Plans to Make Jimny Electric

Suzuki Jimny, a popular compact 4×4 since its launch in 1970, will not be converted to an electric vehicle (EV) anytime soon.

Despite demand for the Jimny in the UK, strict emissions standards mean it’s sold only as a two-seater commercial vehicle in Europe. The brand believes keeping Jimny’s core features intact is key to its success.

Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki explained that an electric version would compromise Jimny’s signature lightweight feel, a quality cherished by enthusiasts.

Instead, Suzuki plans to explore alternative fuels, such as e-fuels or biofuels, which would support Jimny’s classic internal combustion engine (ICE) design.

While many expected a hybrid or EV Jimny for the European market, the company is prioritizing durability and performance for professional users.

In countries like Australia, the Jimny remains available in its traditional four-seater form with both three- and five-door configurations powered by a 1.5-liter engine.

Suzuki’s decision to pause on new EVs reflects the challenges facing the market. With rising competition from affordable Chinese EVs and decreasing government incentives, Suzuki is re-evaluating its EV rollout strategy.

The focus remains on maintaining Jimny’s authentic appeal while considering sustainable fuel options to keep it relevant in the future.
