Musk Cancels Plan For a $25,000 Tesla Calling it “Pointless”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has decided not to make a $25,000 electric vehicle unless it’s fully driverless. He called a standard version “pointless.” During an October 23 earnings call, Musk stated that Tesla’s future is in autonomous technology, not traditional vehicles.

This shift marks a change in Musk’s stance. Earlier this year, he mentioned plans for a cheaper Tesla EV, the “Model 2,” expected to launch in 2025. Investors had hoped this new model would follow the Model 3, priced at $42,490. However, Musk now views fully autonomous cars as the future for Tesla, dropping the idea of a low-cost, non-autonomous car.

Musk briefly mentioned a non-autonomous car, saying, “Our first non-robo isn’t ready where we are just saying,” before he was interrupted. He clarified that producing a $25,000 regular car “would be silly.”

Tesla is now working on a new two-seat autonomous vehicle, the “Cybercab,” priced around $25,000. In 2024, Tesla plans to roll out fully self-driving versions of its Model 3 and Model Y in Texas and California. Production of the Cybercab is expected to begin in 2026.

This change shows Tesla’s evolving priorities. Musk once aimed to produce 20 million cars annually by 2030, but this target has been removed from Tesla’s sustainability report. This shift points to a focus on autonomous technology as Tesla tackles regulatory and technological challenges.

Tesla has not yet provided more details on its plans for affordable, non-autonomous vehicles.
