In October, 129 traffic accidents occurred on Canal Road Faisalabad, leading to three deaths and many severe injuries. Experts believe poor road design is to blame.
Nadeem Khurshid, a town planner, called Canal Road a “death trap,” pointing to flawed design and inadequate infrastructure. Rescue 1122 data also reveals that 619 incidents happened near bus stops, ramps, and entrances along Canal Road.
Key intersections like Thatha Pull, Paipan Wala Pull, and Kashmir Pull reported high accident numbers. Chief Engineer Mehar Muhammad Ayub from the FDA stated that the road’s 21 entrances, intended to provide access, now complicate management.
The road was transferred to the Metropolitan Corporation (MC), but its heavy traffic and multiple access points pose challenges. Chief Officer Muhammad Zubair Watto assured that the departments are working together on an action plan to address safety concerns.
A former MC town planner blamed fragmented oversight for the mismanagement, as no department fully controls Canal Road. Architect Haris Karim raised concerns about the area near Faisal Hospital, where vehicles often misuse lanes, increasing risks.
Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Nadeem Nasir has scheduled an emergency meeting to close illegal ramps and unauthorized entrances. He assured accountability for any official negligence in maintaining road safety.
