The Gmail app on Android, known for its extensive features, is adding another useful tool for its users. Besides AI capabilities powered by Google Gemini, Gmail now aims to improve email search with new sorting filters.
According to a report from Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii, Google has started rolling out these search filters, allowing users to sort emails by “Most recent” or “Most relevant.” He also shared screenshots of the feature.
Earlier, Android Authority contributor AssembleDebug discovered this feature during an APK teardown in late October. While some users can already access the new filters, others may need to wait for the feature to appear on their devices. The gradual release suggests that a server-side update might activate the feature.
This new option replaces the existing “Top results” section, which previously displayed relevant emails at the top, followed by other results in reverse chronological order. Now, users will see a filter button under the carousel of existing options (Labels, From, To, Attachment, Date, Is unread, and Exclude calendar updates). Tapping it opens a menu where users can now choose the “Most recent” or “Most relevant”, making it easier to find specific emails based on personal preferences.
When the feature activates, Gmail will display a brief pop-up to explain the new filters. Although the feature is still rolling out, some users already see these filters in the web version of Gmail, hinting that a broader release for mobile apps may follow soon.
