Grok AI Chatbot on X May Become Free for All Users

X, the social networking platform that was once known as Twitter, may make its Grok chatbot free for all users.

Grok AI is essentially a ChatGPT rival on X, designed by Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI. Until recently, it was exclusively offered to premium subscribers who paid for the service. Over the weekend, keen app researchers and enthusiastic users began to notice signs that a free version of Grok is becoming accessible in certain regions, marking a significant expansion of its availability.

Additinally, TechCrunch was able to confirm that free users in New Zealand are able to access the Grok chatbot now.

According to researcher Swak, the free version comes with usage limitations: users can ask up to 10 questions every two hours with the full Grok-2 model and 20 questions every two hours with the smaller Grok-2 mini model. Users can only make three image requests per day.

To qualify for free access to Grok, users must have accounts that are at least seven days old and linked to a phone number.

Since its launch in August, Grok-2 has offered image generation capabilities powered by Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model, with recent updates allowing the model to interpret images as well. Until now, these features were only accessible to Premium and Premium+ subscribers. Expanding Grok to free users suggests xAI’s aim to increase its user base and gather more feedback to improve Grok’s performance, helping it compete with other prominent AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
