Bluesky, the decentralized social network that rivals X and Threads, has seen a massive surge in users, gaining over 700,000 new sign-ups in the past week.
The app now boasts over 14.5 million users, with the majority hailing from the US. It’s currently the second most popular free social networking app on the US App Store, trailing only Meta’s Threads. This goes to show how American users are looking for alternatives to Elon Musk’s X.
Meanwhile, Threads, despite crossing 275 million monthly users, has faced criticism for engagement bait, moderation issues, and recent misinformation concerns, as reported by Taylor Lorenz. This has led to a growing number of users seeking alternative platforms like Bluesky.
Bluesky has experienced significant growth in recent weeks. On October 24th, the platform announced it had reached 13 million users. This growth accelerated following X’s controversial decision to allow blocked users to view posts from their blockers. Bluesky reported a surge of 500,000 new users in a single day.
The US presidential election may have also contributed to Bluesky’s popularity. Many users are seeking alternatives to platforms owned by Elon Musk, while others, like Taylor Swift fans, are fleeing due to rising hate speech on X.
Bluesky has been continuously improving its features to enhance user experience. Recent additions include pinned posts, video support, and direct messaging capabilities. The platform also allows users to customize their feeds and follow curated starter packs to quickly connect with familiar content creators.
