England’s CDC Sacks County Coach for Inappropriate Behavior

A professional county cricket coach has received a six-month suspension from the sport by the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) for engaging in inappropriate conduct with a player under his guidance.

The incidents, which took place during a pre-season tour in March 2024 for both the men’s and women’s teams of an unnamed county, were classified as serious misconduct.

Following the investigation, the coach was dismissed from his professional role within the game.

On May 22, 2024, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) formally charged the coach, citing a breach of regulation 3.3 of the 2023 Professional Conduct Regulations.

The regulation prohibits conduct that could harm the integrity or reputation of cricket, the ECB, or any individuals within the sport. On July 25, the coach, referred to in the findings as “Coach A,” accepted the charge in a written admission to the CDC.

The identities of all individuals involved, including the player (“Player 1”), another player (“Player 2”), and a senior county employee who provided testimony, were anonymized to protect the privacy of victims and witnesses.

Of the six-month suspension, three months were effectively already served as Coach A had been out of the game since March.

The remaining three months are suspended for two years, contingent on the coach’s adherence to future conduct standards. He is also required to complete training at his own expense, though the CDC chose not to impose a fine, acknowledging the financial impact on the coach and his family.

In a statement on Tuesday, interim director of The Cricket Regulator, Dave Lewis, reinforced the body’s commitment to protecting participants from inappropriate behavior, especially from those in positions of trust.

“The Cricket Regulator seeks to protect all participants from inappropriate sexual behavior, particularly when perpetrated by those in a position of power or trust,” he said.

The CDC considered mitigating factors, including the county coach’s immediate acceptance of responsibility, his remorse, and his previously unblemished record.

ECB has become more vigilant in dealing with cases of inappropriate behavior by players and the staff since Azeem Rafiq’s shocking testimony in his racism case against the governing body.
