Mazda has confirmed that the Iconic SP, inspired by the RX-7, will go into production. This sports coupe, first shown at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, features sleek lines and a powerful hybrid drivetrain. Mazda’s design chief, Masashi Nakayama, emphasized that the concept was always intended for production.
Iconic SP will continue Mazda’s legacy with its rotary engine. The concept includes a dual-rotor rotary engine as a range extender for an electric drivetrain, producing 365 horsepower. This engine supports Mazda’s environmental goals, potentially using carbon-neutral fuels to reduce emissions by up to 90%. Future models might capture CO2, showcasing Mazda’s commitment to sustainable sports cars.
Mazda designed Iconic SP with production in mind. Naohito Saga, from Mazda’s R&D strategy planning division, explained that they carefully researched every detail, from door positions to seating. This reflects Mazda’s dedication to sustainability and the future of rotary engine technology.
Although Mazda hasn’t announced a release date, fans eagerly await Iconic SP. If Mazda captures the spirit of the RX-7, the wait will be worthwhile.
