Private Schools and Colleges Association Challenges Closure Due to Smog

The All Pakistan Private Schools and Colleges Association (APPS&CA) has voiced strong opposition to the Punjab government’s recent decision to close educational institutions due to rising smog levels.

Dr. Malik Abrar Hussain, Central President of APPS&CA, criticized the move, calling it “unwise” and harmful to the nation’s education system. He argued that the education sector is being weakened by a “systematic conspiracy.”

Dr. Hussain stressed that school closures should not be the response to smog, even in areas severely affected by pollution. He also voiced frustration with Punjab government advisors, accusing them of recommending closures indiscriminately, including in regions with little to no smog.

The closures come as the Punjab government ordered schools in 36 districts to remain shut until November 17, urging online classes and reducing attendance in government offices. Punjab Education Minister Rana Sakander Hayat stated that the decision was based on health concerns, as complaints about the impact of smog on students’ health had been rising.

Meanwhile, sources from the Punjab School Education Department suggested the closures could be extended if air quality fails to improve. Discussions are reportedly ongoing regarding potential closures of colleges and universities, with the Punjab Higher Education Department awaiting final instructions.
