South Africa Suffers Another Injury Blow Ahead of Pakistan Series

In a significant setback for South Africa, fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the upcoming second Test against Sri Lanka in Gqeberha and the entire multi-format series against Pakistan due to a groin injury.

Gerald Coetzee, who sustained the injury during the fourth day of the first Test in Durban, will miss up to six weeks of action after scans confirmed a muscle strain in his right groin keeping him out of the Pakistan series.

In his absence, Kwena Maphaka, a promising fast bowler who made his international debut earlier this year during the T20I series against the West Indies, has been called up to replace him in the squad.

The injury occurred as Coetzee bowled in the morning session of the Durban Test. Despite the discomfort, he returned after lunch and managed to take Chandimal’s key wicket, which he caught and bowled. Following that, he did not bowl again.

Gerald Coetzee’s injury compounds South Africa’s growing list of injury concerns. Already without fast-bowling all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who is sidelined with a fractured right middle finger, the Proteas now find themselves further stretched. Nandre Burger is ruled out for the summer due to a lower back stress fracture, and Lungi Ngidi will miss action until January.

The Proteas are scheduled for a high-stakes series against Pakistan, which includes three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests. South Africa will need to navigate these challenges if they are to maintain their competitive edge in the upcoming fixtures.
