Samsung, slated to release the Fold 7 and Flip 7 with larger displays in 2025, is reportedly eyeing a significant advancement for early 2026: a tri-folding smartphone, similar to Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate unveiled earlier this year.
Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), revealed this on social media, clarifying that a tri-fold device isn’t planned for 2025 as Samsung focuses on regaining market share.
Tri-fold technology presents considerable manufacturing challenges; currently, only Huawei has a limited production model. Samsung’s anticipated 2026 launch may be a preemptive move against a rumored foldable iPhone potentially arriving in September of that year.
However, given the timeframe, plans could always shift, so take this information with a grain of salt.
Huawei Mate XT Ultimate
As a comparison, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, released in September this year, is a flagship-grade device, but based on an older chipset that falls behind modern top-tier SoCs, the Kirin 9010. It has a main display nearly as big as tablets at 10.2 inches while the cover display and dual display are sized at 6.7 and 7.9 inches respectively. All of these are LTPO OLED panels.
The camera system is based on a 50MP main shooter with a variable aperture (f/1.4-f/4.0) and OIS support. This is accompanied by a 12MP periscope telephoto camera capable of 5.5x optical zoom, and a final 12MP ultrawide shooter.
The battery size here is 5,600 mAh with 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging.
