Apple’s plans to bring its Apple Intelligence AI features to iPhones in China have encountered significant hurdles, delaying its rollout in the region.
According to a report from The Information, Apple has faced difficulties adapting Baidu’s large language model (LLM), Ernie 4.0, to work efficiently with iPhones, particularly in understanding prompts and providing accurate responses in everyday scenarios.
At first, Apple made an exciting announcement about its latest AI features, indicating that they would be rolled out alongside the launch of the iPhone 16 in October, via the iOS 18.1 update. However, in a following update, the company revealed that there would be a delay in the release of these AI features specifically in China and Europe, causing some disappointment among eager users in those regions.
Another issue complicating Apple’s plans in China revolves around data privacy. Apple’s strict privacy policy prohibits the collection of data from iPhone users for AI-related queries. This conflicts with Baidu’s data collection practices, which involve saving user data for further analysis and model improvement, a necessary step for enhancing AI performance.
The Ernie 4.0 model, which is Baidu’s most advanced LLM, is central to Apple’s ambitions for generative AI across its devices, including iPhones, Macs, and iPads. The AI system is expected to integrate into Siri, further boosting its capabilities.
Despite these challenges, Apple remains committed to incorporating AI into its products, though the timeline for these features in China remains uncertain.
