Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has expressed his concerns about the national team’s failure to consistently produce high-quality T20 players, despite having a thriving platform like the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Speaking during a podcast with ProPakistani’s How Does It Work?, Salman Butt shed light on the matter.
“First off, how does one become a player? You do not become a player through T20. It does not develop your skillset or your game awareness. You do not know how a dismissal is constructed, how an innings is constructed, and how pressure is handled. You cannot play any format without these skills” he said.
“Our player-building platform is wrong. India on the contrary develops players because their youngsters play longer format cricket from the earliest age. He learns how to read the pitch, see how it changes over time, and adapts to different scenarios” Salman Butt said.
“When they studied the T20 format and realized it was all about power, their fitness levels were already better than us and they got even better” he added. “Your players, do not even look like athletes. We are not even working on power.”
The former captain also expressed concern about Pakistan’s over-reliance on a handful of players in T20 cricket, adding that the team lacks the kind of specialized players required for modern T20 cricket.
