The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to unveil a new model for the Champions Trophy on Saturday, December 7 while announcing the tournament schedule.
The much-anticipated announcement has been clouded by a prolonged standoff between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Insiders reveal that both the ICC and the BCCI have begun showing signs of flexibility after facing a resolute PCB. Pakistan’s cricket governing body has remained steadfast, demanding an equitable solution for participation in ICC events without compromising national interests.
Reports indicate that a hybrid model—potentially revolutionary—may soon break the impasse. This arrangement, if finalized, would allow Pakistan to refrain from traveling to India for ICC tournaments while participating at neutral venues instead. This proposal is rumored to span three years, potentially setting a precedent for future tournaments.
Indian media outlets have claimed that the PCB’s proposal has already been accepted in principle. However, contrary to these reports, Thursday’s high-profile ICC meeting in Dubai ended without reaching a formal resolution including the Champions Trophy schedule issue.
The ongoing tension stems from years of political and diplomatic discord between India and Pakistan, which have directly impacted bilateral cricketing ties. Since 2013, the two nations have only faced each other in ICC and ACC tournaments, with no bilateral series scheduled due to heightened political tensions.
If the hybrid model is indeed adopted, it could redefine how cricketing giants with strained political relations participate in global tournaments. While such a compromise addresses immediate concerns, the larger question of long-term stability in cricket relations between India and Pakistan remains unanswered.
