Muhammad Becomes Top Baby Boy Name in England and Wales

For the first time, Muhammad topped the list of baby boy names in England and Wales in 2023, according to the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS). The name, a long-time favorite within the Muslim community, replaced Noah as the most popular choice.

Last year, 4,661 boys were named Muhammad, excluding variations like Mohamed or Mohammad. This marks a significant milestone, as Muhammad has been among the top 10 names for boys since 2016 and ranked second in 2022.

Olivia retained its position as the top name for baby girls, followed by Amelia and Isla, mirroring the 2022 rankings. The ONS attributes Muhammad’s rise to several factors, including the growing Muslim population in England and Wales.

According to the 2021 census, Muslims made up 6.5% of the population, an increase from 4.9% in 2011. Within the Muslim community, it is traditional to name boys after the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a sign of respect.

Famous figures like Mohamed Salah, Muhammad Ali, and Mo Farah may also have contributed to the name’s popularity. Additionally, cultural influences played a role in naming trends, with a surge in girls named Margot following the release of the film Barbie, starring Margot Robbie.
