Margalla Hills covered with snow.
The Supreme Court has directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to submit a comprehensive report on over 100 illegal hotels, restaurants, and kiosks still operating within Margalla Hills National Park.
During the hearing, it was disclosed that despite prior demolition orders from the court, approximately 134 illegal establishments remain in the park. The court criticized the CDA for failing to enforce its earlier directives and raised concerns about persistent violations.
The court questioned why the CDA had not taken action to remove illegal constructions, particularly in the Monal restaurant area. The Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that these unauthorized structures, including kiosks, are contributing to environmental degradation.
Justice Jameel Mandokhel inquired whether the court’s previous orders were specific to Monal or applied to all illegal constructions in the park. Justice Musarat Hilali highlighted the severe environmental impact on the park, especially on its endangered wildlife.
Led by Justice Aminuddin Khan, the court reiterated that Margalla Hills is a protected area and declared all construction activities within the park illegal. The CDA has been given a deadline to provide an updated report as the hearing proceeds.
