Nvidia’s top-tier GeForce RTX 4090 GPU has been discontinued, and its price has surged ahead of the launch of the next-generation RTX 5090.
Released nearly two years ago, the RTX 4090 offered a significant performance boost over its predecessors, the RTX 3090 and 3090 Ti. While many expected price reductions as the card approached the end of its lifecycle, the opposite has happened. The discontinuation has led to significant price increases, making it more expensive than ever.
The RTX 4090 is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Major retailers like Newegg and Amazon have limited stock, with most models either out of stock or priced significantly higher than their original MSRP. While some stores have the GPU listed at $2700, other websites are showing prices as high as $3500 and even $3699.
B&H Photo and Best Buy have officially listed the RTX 4090 as discontinued. This suggests that Nvidia has reduced or halted production of the card. As a result, the remaining stock is being sold at inflated prices by a few retailers.
The price hikes and stock shortages for the GeForce RTX 4090 are not limited to the US. The EU and UK markets are facing similar issues.
Typically, as new graphics cards are about to launch, older models become more affordable to clear out existing inventory. However, the RTX 4090 is an exception. Production was already limited in the second half of the year, and it was officially discontinued in October or November.
With limited supply and high demand, retailers are now focusing on the upcoming RTX 5090. Meanwhile, used and refurbished RTX 4090 cards may start appearing on the market as early adopters upgrade to the latest generation.
