UAE to End Free Charging for Electric Cars From 2025

The government-owned electric vehicle (EV) charging network, UAEV, announced on Thursday that its revised tariffs will come into effect in January 2025. The updated rates will charge Dh1.20 per kWh (plus VAT) for DC chargers and Dh0.70 per kWh (plus VAT) for AC chargers.

These new tariffs represent a significant step toward enhancing the sustainability and scalability of the EV charging infrastructure. It is worth noting, however, that EV charging services have remained free since the introduction of tariffs in May.

To improve user experience, UAEV is launching a mobile application with features such as locating nearby charging stations, live status updates, and seamless payment options. Additionally, a dedicated 24/7 call center will provide instant support and assistance, ensuring a smooth experience for users.

“The introduction of standardized charging tariffs, along with innovative solutions like the UAEV app and round-the-clock support, underscores our commitment to improving the EV driver experience,” said Sharif Al Olama, Chairman of UAEV. “By expanding our network and aligning with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, we aim to drive a cleaner, greener future for all.”

Looking ahead, UAEV plans to establish a network of 1,000 chargers by 2030, strategically positioned across urban centers, highways, and transit hubs throughout the UAE. These chargers will be distributed across all emirates, ensuring convenient access for both inter-city and intra-city EV users.
