Ben Stokes Vows Comeback After Being Ruled Out for Champions Trophy

England’s Test captain Ben Stokes has vowed to come back stronger after being ruled out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy following a left hamstring injury sustained during the third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton. The setback comes as a blow to the charismatic all-rounder who will miss three months of action.

Stokes sustained the injury during the third Test of England’s historic 2-1 series win in New Zealand. The match, held at Seddon Park, saw the skipper leave the field during New Zealand’s innings after injuring his left hamstring. England went on to lose the Test but secured their first overseas series victory since their success in Pakistan during the 2022-23 season.

An official statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), released on December 23, confirmed the nature of the injury:

England Men’s Test captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out of all cricket for at least three months after further assessments confirmed he has torn his left hamstring. The Durham all-rounder will undergo surgery in January. The injury occurred during the third Test in Hamilton, during England’s recent 2-1 Test series victory in New Zealand.

Fortunately for England, the injury does not affect their Test plans, as the next red-ball series is scheduled for May 22 against Zimbabwe. By then, Stokes is expected to have recovered fully. However, the timing of Ben Stokes’ injury has ruled him out of several key assignments, including England’s white-ball matches in India and the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE.

Stokes, who had already been excluded from the limited-overs squads, will also miss his debut season in South Africa’s SA20 league, where he was set to represent MI Cape Town.

Hours after the ECB’s announcement, Stokes took to Twitter to share a fiery and determined message:

The post was met with an outpouring of support from fans and teammates alike, with many expressing confidence in his return as England’s talisman.
