Mandatory genetic testing will be introduced for all UAE citizens planning to marry as part of the premarital screening program starting January 2025.
Previously, while premarital medical examinations were required for both citizens and residents, genetic testing was only optional. This new measure stems from a decision by the Emirates Genome Council, approved during the UAE government’s annual meetings.
According to experts, genetic testing can identify over 570 genetic mutations linked to hereditary conditions, including cardiomyopathy, genetic epilepsy, spinal muscular atrophy, hearing loss, cystic fibrosis, and other chronic or severe illnesses that are challenging to treat.
The initiative aims to establish a comprehensive national genetic database, enabling the early detection of genetic disorders among Emiratis and supporting timely medical intervention.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention highlighted that this move represents a significant advancement in healthcare. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, it aligns with the UAE Centennial Vision 2071, promoting sustainable development and improving overall quality of life.
The Ministry further stated that it is working collaboratively with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the program’s success. Medical staff, specialized expertise, guidelines, and technical infrastructure are already in place as part of the National Genome Strategy to facilitate the implementation of genetic testing for Emirati couples preparing for marriage.

idiots poking their nose in every matter, better leave united arse emirates.
