Virat Kohli in Hot Water After Altercation With Debutant Sam Konstas

The first morning of the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was marred by an on-field altercation between Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli and Australian debutant opener Sam Konstas.

The altercation occurred after the conclusion of an over, as fielders changed ends in the opening hour of the Test match. Sam Konstas, who had been aggressively ramping Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, crossed paths with Virat Kohli.

The Indian batter appeared to veer towards the 19-year-old Australian, resulting in an apparent collision. What followed was a brief but intense exchange of words and a cold stare from Kohli, prompting intervention from Australian opener Usman Khawaja and the on-field umpires to de-escalate the situation.

While the moment added drama to the Test, it was not well-received by pundits. Many criticized Kohli for initiating the confrontation.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan, on commentary duties, said,

He’s been rattled by a 19-year-old. Sam Konstas did absolutely nothing wrong there. Virat veered towards him. You can’t do that; you’re just not allowed to do that.

Australian legend Ricky Ponting echoed Vaughan’s sentiments,Virat walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation. No doubt in my mind whatsoever. Fielders should be nowhere near the batsman at that stage.”

Despite the tense exchange, Sam Konstas held his nerve and delivered a standout performance on debut. The 19-year-old became the youngest Australian opener to score a half-century in Test cricket, compiling a resilient 60 off 65 balls before falling to Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

The incident has raised questions about whether Kohli could face disciplinary action under the ICC Code of Conduct. Specifically, Article 2.12 addresses inappropriate physical contact, stating thatany form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited in cricketand that players whodeliberately, recklessly and/or negligently walk or run into or shoulder another Player or Umpireare in violation.

The level of offense in such cases can range from Level 1 to Level 4, with penalties varying from a warning and a small fine to a suspension. Given that this incident involved a fellow player rather than an umpire or official, Kohli could face a Level 1 or Level 2 charge.

The determining factors for severity include:

  • Whether the contact was deliberate, reckless, negligent, or avoidable.
  • The force of the contact.
  • Any resulting injury.
  • The identity of the person involved in the contact.

At worst, Kohli could face a Level 2 offense, which carries a penalty of four demerit points, translating into two suspension points—enough to force him to miss a Test match. However, a less severe Level 1 offense could result in one demerit point and a fine ranging from 0-25% of match fees.
