Karachi Traffic Police Collected Rs. 85 Crore in Fines From Citizens in 2024

In 2024, Karachi citizens collectively paid Rs. 850 million in traffic fines, according to data shared by the traffic police. A total of 11.57 lac challans were issued during the year for various violations of traffic laws.

The largest number of fines were related to vehicle number plate violations, with 2.21 lac challans resulting in Rs. 11.93 crore in penalties. Signal violations were the second most common offense, leading to 1.96 lac challans and fines amounting to Rs. 12.49 crore.

Other major offenses included overloading, which saw 2 lac challans issued with fines totaling Rs. 10.31 crore, and no-parking violations, which resulted in 1.30 lac challans and Rs. 11.57 crore in penalties. One-way and wrong-way driving were also frequent violations, with 91,000 challans and fines of Rs. 2.02 crore.

Motorcyclists contributed significantly to the fines, with 84,000 challans issued for riding without helmets, resulting in Rs. 4.24 crore in penalties. Fines were also collected for other offenses, including Rs 5.31 crore for fancy number plates, Rs. 3.75 crore for obstructing traffic, and Rs. 1.07 crore for vehicles lacking speedometers.
