Pakistan’s Biggest Copper-Gold Mine May Shut Down Within a Month

Pakistan’s largest operating copper and gold mine could shut down within a month if disruptions to the supply of essential materials continue, Financial Times reported.

The managing director of Saindak Metals Limited wrote to Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy on June 29 that deteriorating law and order conditions have severely disrupted the transportation of critical cargo.

The letter said continued logistical challenges could make uninterrupted operations unsustainable.

The Saindak Copper Gold Project has been operated since 2001 by the Metallurgical Corporation of China under a joint venture with Saindak Metals Limited.

Almost all of its copper output is exported to China, making it one of Pakistan’s most significant mineral export projects.

The province has witnessed a sharp rise in security issues in recent years, with transport routes and infrastructure increasingly affected.

Road travel to the mine has reportedly become increasingly hazardous.

Pakistan has maintained that it is committed to providing security for foreign investors and has intensified security measures in Balochistan
