Tensions between India and Bangladesh continue to escalate, as reports indicate Bangladesh is seeking short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) from Pakistan to strengthen its defenses against a potential Indian attack.
According to an intelligence report cited by the Indian Defence Research Wing (IDRW), Bangladesh has approached Pakistan to acquire the Abdali SRBM, which has a range of 400 kilometers.
The report suggests Pakistan is likely to agree to the request for two reasons: to increase its regional influence by supporting Bangladesh amid strained ties with India and because the Abdali missile’s short-range poses no direct threat to Pakistan itself.
These missiles are primarily suited for use against India, with whom Bangladesh shares a lengthy border.
However, fulfilling this request could require Pakistan to navigate international arms control agreements like the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), even though neither Bangladesh nor Pakistan is a member.
Defense analysts point out that the Abdali SRBM, also known as Hatf-II, could pose a serious risk to India’s northeastern regions.
Designed for quick battlefield deployment, this missile system, developed by Pakistan’s Space Research Commission (SUPARCO), provides a tactical advantage in short-range conflicts and could reach key cities in India’s northeast.
