Dubai authorities have successfully dismantled two major international crime networks involved in money laundering operations worth a combined total of Dh641 million.
Case 1: Smuggling Funds from the UK to the UAE
In the first case, the Dubai Public Prosecution referred an Emirati national, 21 British nationals, two Americans, a Czech national, and two companies owned by the Emirati to the Criminal Court of First Instance. The individuals and entities face charges of laundering Dh461 million, forgery of official documents, and their use.
Investigations revealed that funds were smuggled from the UK to the UAE through two local companies, which served as fronts to conceal the illegal origins of the money. The network used forged documents and evaded customs inspections by falsely declaring the funds as proceeds from legitimate UK trade.
Case 2: Cryptocurrency-Based Money Laundering Network
In the second operation, Dubai authorities dismantled an international organized crime network that laundered Dh180 million using cryptocurrencies.
The Dubai Public Prosecution referred 30 individuals and three companies involved in the scheme to the Money Laundering Court. Operating across the UK and Dubai, the network used unlicensed cryptocurrency intermediaries in both regions to launder money.
Key orchestrators of the operation included two Indian nationals and one British national. The scheme involved proceeds from illegal activities such as drug trafficking, fraud, and tax evasion in the UK. Authorities carried out a carefully planned operation, leading to the arrest of the accused and the freezing of bank accounts linked to the laundering activities.
Coordinated Efforts and Success
These successful crackdowns were the result of coordinated efforts by the Public Funds Prosecution in Dubai, the Dubai Economic Security Centre, Dubai Police’s Anti-Money Laundering Unit, the UAE Financial Intelligence Unit, Dubai Customs, and the International Cooperation Department of the UAE Ministry of Justice.
The cases highlight Dubai’s firm stance against financial crimes and its commitment to international cooperation in combating money laundering and other illegal activities
