Australia Drops World Cup Winner from the Squad for BGT Finale

Australia has made a key change to the squad ahead of the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test against India at the SCG, with all-rounder Mitchell Marsh being dropped from the playing XI after a string of poor outings. In his place, Tasmanian Beau Webster is set to make his long-awaited Test debut.

Mitchell Marsh’s place in the side had been under scrutiny following a lackluster series with both bat and ball. With just 73 runs at an average of 10.42 from the first four Tests, his performances fell short of expectations. The majority of his runs came during the second innings in Perth when the match had already been decided.

Marsh’s bowling was equally underwhelming, having bowled only 33 overs across seven innings (excluding the brief second innings in Brisbane). Since taking 2 for 12 in the series opener, Marsh has managed just 1 for 127 from his last 28 overs adding extra pressure on the team’s bowling lineup.

Beau Webster’s inclusion marks a reward for his standout performances in domestic cricket. A prolific all-rounder for Tasmania, Webster has been a dominant force in the Sheffield Shield. Last season, he was the highest run-scorer with 938 runs at 58.62, while also claiming 30 wickets at 29.30. This year, he has continued his form, scoring 303 runs at 50.50 and taking 9 wickets at 37.88 in four Shield matches.

Webster’s versatility extends to his bowling as well, and he has been trusted with more significant bowling loads than Marsh. He played a pivotal role in Australia A’s tour matches against India A earlier this summer, where he claimed two three-wicket hauls and made vital contributions with the bat.

Cricket Australia’s decision to include Webster in the final BGT test squad was likely also based on Sam Konstas’ stellar debut at the MCG where the 19-year-old took the international game like a fish to water. Webster’s debut will not only be a momentous occasion for him but also a reflection of the depth and competition within Australian cricket. His all-round abilities will add valuable balance to the Australian team as they prepare for the final Test in Sydney.
