3 Arrested for Illegally Hunting Markhor in Balochistan

Three individuals, including two government employees, were arrested on Thursday for illegally hunting the rare Suleiman Markhor in the mountainous Takato Range.

Authorities recovered the remains of the hunted Markhor along with the weapons used in the illicit activity.

According to officials, the incident occurred in the Takato area, located between Quetta and Pishin within the Bostan jurisdiction of Pishin district, a designated protected zone.

Assistant Commissioner Karizat Amir Hamza Baloch stated that a successful operation was conducted in the Bostan Industrial Zone with the support of the Levies Force. The operation was initiated based on intelligence reports about ongoing illegal hunting in the area.

During the operation, three suspects were apprehended while attempting to transport Markhor’s carcass in a jeep under the cover of darkness. The suspects included two government employees — police officer Izhar Ahmad and WASA employee Musawir Jan — along with a third individual, Saddam Khan. All three are residents of Boston.

A case has been registered against the suspects under sections 9, 16B, and other provisions of the Balochistan Wildlife Act, 2014.
