Pakistan Delay Finalizing Playing XI Ahead of Second Test

With the second Test against South Africa set to begin at Newlands, Cape Town, Pakistan finds themselves in an unsettling predicament after failing to name their playing XI.

Despite time ticking away, the visitors have yet to finalize their playing XI, citing the need to gather more information on the pitch conditions.

Captain Shan Masood acknowledged the difficulty in striking the right balance for the side. “We’d like to have one final look at the pitch,” he said during a pre-match press conference. “It looks a bit different, with less grass cover, but we want to take our time and assess what the best possible XI is.”

Masood’s comments highlight Pakistan’s cautious approach, contrasting with South Africa, which has already named its side, including the inclusion of spinner Keshav Maharaj.

The Newlands surface has come under scrutiny following a controversial showing during the previous Test played at the venue. Under new groundsman Braam Mong, the pitch was rated “unsatisfactory” after a game between South Africa and India ended in just 100 overs. Fast bowlers dominated on an uneven surface, with spinners left redundant.

This history has raised concerns about what to expect from the strip for the second Test, with Pakistan particularly wary.

Shan Masood admitted that Pakistan’s composition challenges stem from a lack of all-rounder depth compared to their opponents. South Africa’s side features several seam-bowling all-rounders, including Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen. Pakistan’s sole all-rounder, Aamer Jamal, has only played a limited role in the ongoing series.

If Pakistan opts for a specialist spinner, it will likely come at the expense of a pace bowler, reducing their seam options to three. Masood expressed reservations about such a trade-off, given the importance of pace in South African conditions.
