Punjab Govt Announces Deadline to Register For Free Solar Panels

The Punjab government has announced January 5, 2025, as the last date for residents to register for its free solar panel program. Eligible citizens can apply by sending their CNIC number via SMS to 8800 or through the portal at cmsolarscheme.punjab.gov.pk.

The initiative, launched by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on December 6, 2024, aims to ease the burden of rising electricity costs, targeting consumers using 100 to 200 units monthly.

The program will distribute 100,000 solar systems over the next year. Consumers using up to 100 units will receive 550-watt systems, while those using up to 200 units will get 1100-watt systems. This is expected to lower electricity bills and cut carbon emissions by 57,000 tons annually.

Beneficiaries will be selected through a computerized ballot, with verification tied to their electricity bill details. Authorities will link the solar panels and inverters to CNICs to prevent theft.

The initiative promotes renewable energy and reduces the federal subsidy burden. A helpline will assist applicants with registration and installation.
