Punjab to Use Water Sprinklers to Reduce Dust and Smog

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has introduced a new approach to tackle air pollution and dust in Lahore, drawing inspiration from measures used in China.

The plan involves installing locally developed water sprinkler systems at 1,500 construction sites across Lahore. After three weeks of successful trials, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is moving forward with its implementation.

Maryam Nawaz has directed the Communication and Works (C&W) Department and the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to begin installing sprinklers immediately. These systems function by spraying water in a fountain-like manner to suppress dust and debris at construction sites.

The CM also mandated the installation of this system at Qaddafi Stadium by January 15, according to Express News. Additionally, construction sites must now use green coverings to contain dust, cement, and soil during ongoing projects.

From February 10 onward, legal action will be taken against sites that fail to comply with the water sprinkling requirements.

Senator Maryam Aurangzeb highlighted that these measures, along with misting techniques, aim to reduce smog and enhance air quality. She noted that the EPA has been working for nine months to curb air pollution.
