Pakistan has been penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate during the second Test match against South Africa in Cape Town, resulting in a 25% fine of their match fee and the loss of 5 ICC World Test Championship points.
Sanction Imposed by ICC Match Referee
The penalty was handed down by Match Referee Richie Richardson who determined that Pakistan was five overs short of the required target after accounting for time allowances.
ICC Code of Conduct and Points Deduction
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams that fail to meet the minimum over rate are fined 5% of their match fee for every over they fall behind. In this case, Pakistan was penalized accordingly.
Furthermore, under Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a team is docked one point for each over short. As a result, 5 WTC points have been deducted from Pakistan’s total, which could have a significant impact on their standing in the current World Test Championship cycle.
Captain Shan Masood Accepts Sanction
Pakistan captain Shan Masood accepted responsibility for the violation and pled guilty to the offence, agreeing to the proposed sanction. As a result, there was no need for a formal hearing.
Impact on Pakistan’s World Test Championship Campaign
The loss of 5 points for slow over rate does not really cost Pakistan in the greater scheme of things. The Green shirts are already out of the WTC Final hunt which will take place between Australia and South Africa.
