The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has officially appointed former Pakistan captain Younis Khan as the mentor for Afghanistan’s cricket team in preparation for the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Younis Khan, renowned for his illustrious career tally of 10,099 Test runs in 118 matches, will join the Afghanistan side as a mentor ahead of the tournament, which runs from February 19 to March 9, 2025, in Pakistan and Dubai.
A Familiar Face in Afghan Cricket
This is not Younis’ first stint with Afghanistan. The former Pakistan skipper previously served as their batting coach in 2022, leaving a positive impact on the team. His appointment as mentor is seen as a strategic decision by the ACB to provide the squad with valuable guidance and leadership in what promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament.
Younis’ track record speaks volumes. He led Pakistan to victory in the 2009 ICC T20 World Cup, has coached various teams across formats, and served in roles such as batting consultant for Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL and head coach of the Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League.
Afghanistan’s Tough Road Ahead
Afghanistan, steadily establishing itself as a competitive force in world cricket, has been placed in Group B of the tournament alongside Australia, South Africa, and England. Group A features Pakistan, India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh.
The team will hope Younis Khan’s mentorship can provide the tactical edge and composure needed to excel against some of the world’s strongest cricketing sides.
