Al-Azhar University has announced plans to establish a campus in Pakistan. The university aims to strengthen ties between the two countries, promote women’s education, and foster a deeper understanding of Islamic teachings and Arabic culture.
The announcement was made during a meeting in Islamabad on Friday between Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Egypt’s Grand Mufti Nazir Mohamed Ayad.
Grand Mufti Ayad highlighted this collaboration’s significance in enhancing both nations’ educational landscapes. He stressed the importance of learning Arabic to comprehend Islam’s true teachings and noted Al-Azhar University’s strong commitment to women’s education, with over 40% of its students being women.

Minister Siddiqui underscored the historical and cultural bonds between Egypt and Pakistan, home to ancient civilizations among the oldest in the world. He also discussed the upcoming International Girls Conference in Pakistan, scheduled for January 11-12, which celebrates Islamic countries’ efforts to advance girls’ education.
He emphasized that Islam advocates for the education of both men and women, countering misconceptions about any prohibition on women’s education in Islam. The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring equal educational opportunities for women and stressed that educating women is essential for building a progressive society.
Education Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani assured the Ministry of Education’s full support in establishing the Al-Azhar campus in Pakistan. He also noted that over 2,000 female students from colleges and universities across the country have been invited to participate in the International Girls Conference.
