Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has announced that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is expected to restart direct flights to the United Kingdom (UK) by the end of February, as reported by ARY News.
During an appearance on ARY News’ program “Aiteraz Hai”, Khawaja Asif shared that PIA also plans to expand its operations to 19 European destinations, including cities like Barcelona and Milan. He further revealed that flights to the United States and Canada are also on the agenda.
The minister highlighted that these initiatives are part of PIA’s strategy to boost its value, enhancing its appeal for potential privatization.
PIA has been striving to revive its operations and reputation after encountering numerous challenges in recent years.
Just recently, PIA’s first flight to Paris, PK 749, successfully landed at Charles de Gaulle Airport, marking the resumption of this route after a hiatus of over four years. The flight was warmly welcomed by Charge d’Affaires Ms. Huzefa Khanum and members of the Pakistani community, alongside PIA and aviation officials.
It is worth noting that PIA is currently seeking formal approval to resume flight operations to the UK.
As per reports, the airline has submitted a formal request to the UK Department of Transport and Civil Aviation under the directives of CEO Khurram Mushtaq. Sources from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirmed the receipt of this letter, which includes a request for reinstatement of the Third Country Authorization, a requirement for PIA’s operations in the UK.
The airline aims to relaunch flights to key UK cities, including London, Birmingham, and Manchester, as part of its broader efforts to expand and restore its international presence.
