Former Cricketer Praises PSL While Taking a Subtle Dig at IPL

Former New Zealand cricketer and Islamabad United head coach Mike Hesson openly praised the Pakistan Super League (PSL) while criticizing the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) and its controversial ‘Impact Player Rule.’

Hesson expressed his views during a post-draft press conference, where he lauded the PSL’s structure and took a subtle dig at the IPL’s recent rule changes.

Speaking to reporters, Hesson said,

I don’t like the ‘Impact Player Rule’ in the IPL, and I’m happy that this rule is not implemented in the PSL. I don’t like to compare T20 leagues, but that IPL rule is something which I don’t want in the PSL.

What Is the ‘Impact Player Rule’?

The ‘Impact Player Rule,’ introduced in the IPL in 2023, allows teams to make tactical substitutions during a match. Each team can name five substitute players in addition to their starting XI before the match begins. During the game, the captain can call upon one of these substitutes, known as the Impact Player, to replace any player from the starting XI at any point in the match.

The rule was designed to add a strategic element to the game, giving teams the flexibility to adapt to changing match situations. For instance, a team could bring in an additional batter during a high-scoring chase or a specialist bowler to defend a total. However, the rule has not been without its detractors.

Hesson is not the first to criticize the ‘Impact Player Rule.’ Indian captain Rohit Sharma has also voiced his concerns, stating that he isn’t a “big fan” of the rule. One of the primary criticisms is that it diminishes the role of all-rounders, who are traditionally valued for their ability to contribute with both bat and ball. With teams now having the option to replace a player mid-game, the need for versatile all-rounders has reportedly decreased.

Another major criticism is that the rule has led to inflated scores in the IPL. Teams, knowing they have the cushion of an additional batter, have become more aggressive in their approach, leading to higher totals. While this may make for entertaining cricket, purists argue that it disrupts the balance between bat and ball, which is a cornerstone of the sport.
