Fact Check: Lahore High Court has Not Ordered Dog Culling in Punjab

Recent reports circulating online and in newspapers claiming that the Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered dog culling in Punjab are completely false and misrepresent the court’s actual decision. The LHC has been reinforcing the ban on dog culling in the province.

The misinformation stems from misinterpretations of a recent case heard by a two-member bench of the LHC, comprising Justice Shahid Karim and Justice Sajid Mehmood Sethi. We at ProPakistani confirmed the news with Animal Rights Lawyer Altamush Saeed, who served as the lead counsel in the case. Saeed informed us that the LHC has not ordered any dog culling and any news claiming so is misrepresenting it.

Instead, the court’s decision revolved around the Punjab Animal Birth Control Policy of 2021. This crucial policy explicitly bans dog culling and mandates a humane approach to managing the stray dog population through mass sterilization and vaccination. This policy aims to effectively reduce the dog population, prevent dog bites, and ultimately humanely eradicate rabies.

According to Saeed, the judges clearly announced that the Animal Birth Control Policy of 2021 has the full force of the law. This landmark decision effectively puts an end to any possibility of sanctioned dog culling in Punjab.

It’s important to note that while the court has made its pronouncement, a final, written judgment has not yet been published. Saeed rightly pointed out that it is simply not possible to accurately report on a judgment before the official document has been issued by the court.

Therefore, any news suggesting that the LHC has ordered dog culling is based on inaccurate information and premature reporting. It is crucial to rely on verified sources and await the official judgment from the Lahore High Court for accurate information.
