Karachi Recognized as One of Global Cities Fighting Against Climate Change

Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced on Tuesday that Karachi’s membership in the “C40 Cities” network has been officially restored after a three-year suspension.

The C40 network consists of major cities worldwide dedicated to combating climate change.

“The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group had suspended Karachi’s membership in 2022, but the city’s status has now been reinstated,” the mayor said in a statement.

He added that Mark Watts, the executive director of the C40 Cities Climate Group, sent a letter acknowledging the city’s efforts in developing the Paris-Aligned Climate Action Plan (CAP). Watts expressed confidence that Karachi would meet the 2021-2024 Leadership Standards by the March 2025 deadline, which includes completing and implementing the CAP.

“Karachi must now accelerate its progress to fulfill all C40 membership requirements,” the mayor stated, emphasizing the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s commitment to upholding international environmental standards for a sustainable future.
