Police have arrested Dr. Zulqernain Butt, a Grade-19 senior consultant anesthetist, in connection with a terrorism case after he allegedly opened fire on two school buses in the Cantonment area on Wednesday morning.
One of the buses was carrying students during the incident, according to police reports.
Following the shooting, Dr. Butt reportedly returned home, picked up his children, dropped them off at school, and then proceeded to a private hospital on Ferozepur Road, where he works part-time.
A police official stated that a 9mm pistol, used in the shooting, was recovered from a locker in the private hospital. The suspect is said to have a history of aggressive behavior and unprovoked violence over minor issues.
An FIR has been registered against Dr. Butt under charges of terrorism and attempted murder.
The incident occurred on Bedian Road near Waqas Market when two school buses were on their morning route to pick up children. One bus slowed down to take a U-turn, which led to the suspect, driving behind in his car, repeatedly attempting to overtake. During the maneuver, his car collided with one of the buses.
Enraged by the collision, the suspect allegedly took out a weapon and fired indiscriminately. One bullet struck a bus tire. Fortunately, no children were on that bus at the time. When the bus driver tried to intervene, the suspect fled the scene.
The bus driver immediately informed the school management, who alerted law enforcement agencies. Senior officials coordinated with police, and hours later, the suspect was located and arrested.
This alarming incident has raised concerns about public safety and road rage, with authorities assuring a thorough investigation into the matter.
