Authorities in Punjab have intensified their crackdown on obscenity and vulgarity in theatre performances across the province.
Acting on the directives of Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bukhari and Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Culture Shazia Rizwan, officials have sealed two theatres for violating cultural norms.
Assistant Commissioner Hakim Khan sealed the Moti Mahal Theatre in Rawalpindi. At the same time, officials took similar action against Nagina Theatre in Sheikhupura following reports of breaches of the ethical code of conduct.
During a recent meeting, Shazia Rizwan instructed officials to thoroughly investigate allegations of vulgarity and implement strict measures against violators. In discussions with deputy and assistant commissioners, she emphasized the importance of upholding cultural and social values, resulting in the immediate closure of the offending theatres.
“The government is dedicated to providing quality entertainment while eliminating unethical acts presented under the guise of art,” Rizwan said, underscoring the administration’s commitment to ensuring decency in theatre productions.
On the previous evening, Shazia Rizwan visited Prince Theatre in Lahore, where she was welcomed by Syed Muhammad Yousaf Prince, a prominent playwright and chairman of the theatre, along with theatre staff. During her visit, she was accompanied by Punjab Art Council Deputy Director Zahid Iqbal and Pukar Deputy Director Sherbaz.
These actions reflect the government’s determination to strike a balance between promoting cultural entertainment and preserving ethical standards.
