In a major move toward sustainable agriculture, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a project to transition agricultural tube wells to solar energy.
Under the first phase, 8,000 tube wells across Punjab will be converted to solar power, providing long-term savings for farmers. Beneficiaries were selected through a lottery system, with Muhammad Nawaz from Attock being the first name drawn.
The list of farmers from Narowal district was also reviewed during the event. The switch to solar-powered wells is expected to bring significant financial relief, with individual farmers potentially saving up to Rs. 10,000 daily and over Rs. 3.25 lakh per month.
To support the transition, the Punjab government is offering subsidies based on system capacity: Rs. 5 lakh for 10-kilowatt systems, Rs. 7.5 lakh for 15-kilowatt systems, and Rs10 lakh for 20-kilowatt systems.
With over 530,000 applications received, 385,000 farmers were deemed eligible. The goal is to convert 87% of diesel and electricity-powered tube wells to solar energy by June.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that this initiative will modernize Punjab’s agriculture, reduce operational costs, and improve productivity. She also highlighted other farmer-focused programs, including the Farmer’s Card, advanced farming tools, and training opportunities.
