USAID Website Down After Reports of Possible Shutdown

The official website of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) remained inaccessible on Monday, two days after it was taken offline. This comes amid reports that the agency is being merged into the State Department as part of broader government restructuring.

The development follows statements from Elon Musk, who has been involved in implementing major federal reforms. During an online discussion, he confirmed that President Trump had approved shutting down USAID, an agency established in 1961 to oversee foreign aid programs.

USAID, one of the world’s largest providers of humanitarian assistance, had a budget of $43 billion in 2023 and employed over 10,000 workers. The agency funds projects aimed at tackling poverty, hunger, and disease worldwide.

However, with its operations disrupted, employees were instructed to work remotely or remain at home, while office signs bearing the agency’s seal were removed.

The Trump administration recently issued an executive order freezing foreign aid funding while reviewing how it aligns with its “America First” policy. Reports indicate USAID’s functions may soon be placed under direct State Department control, raising concerns among lawmakers and aid groups about the agency’s future.
