Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his immediate retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), bringing an end to a 71-match career in the 50-over format. The 35-year-old, a key figure in Australia’s recent World Cup campaigns, has chosen to step away from ODIs to prolong his T20I career.
The timing of Stoinis’s decision leaves Australia with a significant void ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE. With Mitch Marsh already ruled out due to injury, Stoinis was seen as the ideal replacement to fill the gap in the world champions’ squad. With pace duo Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood also facing uncertainty, the Australian selectors may now have to make multiple changes to their squad.
Stoinis departs the ODI scene after representing Australia in two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups (2019 and 2023), with his last appearance coming against Pakistan in Perth in November 2023. Known for his ability to turn games with both bat and ball, he played a vital role in Australia’s white-ball setup for nearly a decade.
Reflecting on his ODI career, Stoinis expressed gratitude for the journey while reaffirming his commitment to international T20 cricket.
This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support. I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan.
While his ODI chapter has closed, Marcus Stoinis remains a key player in Australia’s T20 setup. His decision to focus on T20s aligns with the growing trend among white-ball specialists to prioritize the shorter format, ensuring that he remains a sought-after asset in both international and franchise cricket.
For Australia, the immediate challenge is filling the void left by Stoinis and Marsh ahead of the Champions Trophy. With the squad confirmation deadline looming, the next few weeks will be crucial in shaping the team’s campaign in Pakistan and the UAE.
