OpenAI Unveils “Deep Research” Feature

OpenAI surprised its 3.9 million followers on X.com with an unexpected livestream announcement titled “Deep Research.” The cryptic message immediately sparked speculation, and when the stream went live, the company introduced its latest AI advancement: an agentic AI model designed to perform multi-step research, discover content, synthesize findings, and apply reasoning to complex topics.

What is Deep Research?

According to OpenAI, Deep Research represents a significant step forward in AI’s ability to conduct and refine research tasks. This new tool actively discovers and analyzes online content, synthesizes large amounts of information, and uses reasoning to refine results. One of its key abilities is asking clarifying questions to stay on track during multi-step research.

Deep Research is launching today for ChatGPT Pro users, with Plus and Team users set to receive access next. OpenAI describes it as an agent that synthesizes online information and completes multi-step research tasks on behalf of users, potentially transforming how AI assists in knowledge work.

The Connection to OpenAI’s Secret “Strawberry” Project

Interestingly, Deep Research appears to align with previous internal documentation that leaked in 2024, which mentioned a secretive OpenAI initiative called “Strawberry,” formerly known as Q*.

According to Reuters, this project aimed to give AI human-like reasoning skills, enabling it to navigate the internet and conduct sophisticated research autonomously. A source familiar with OpenAI’s research suggested that OpenAI viewed Strawberry as a breakthrough in enhancing AI’s critical thinking abilities, a historically challenging area for AI models.

OpenAI only provided a general statement about the industry’s continuous research into new AI capabilities, without directly confirming or denying its existence when asked about Strawberry.

Mixed Reactions from the Public and AI Researchers

The announcement of Deep Research has generated a wide range of reactions online. Some X.com users joked about the timing, posting comments like:

  • “It’s like DeepSeek, but cleaner.”
  • “Hope this research includes the secret to waking up early!”

Others, however, expressed skepticism over OpenAI’s transparency, questioning whether the company can be fully trusted with such an advanced AI model.

Despite the mixed public response, AI researchers and analysts see this as a major leap toward autonomous AI agents that could reshape knowledge work by making research more efficient, in-depth, and contextually aware.

A Step Closer to AI-Powered Research Agents

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously stated that reasoning ability will be the key to future AI advancements. With Deep Research now available to Pro users and expanding soon, OpenAI is moving closer to its vision of AI-driven research agents that can analyze, synthesize, and refine information autonomously.

Whether this turns out to be a groundbreaking AI revolution or just another experiment remains to be seen, but Deep Research is certainly a bold step in AI’s evolution.
