The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has successfully managed the first commercial shipment of electric vehicles from China’s BYD Company. These vehicles arrived at the Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), a private facility within KPT.
BYD’s entry into the Pakistani market is expected to drive significant advancements in the local auto industry by promoting cleaner transportation alternatives.
In August 2024, BYD officially entered the Pakistani market, introducing models such as the Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion 6. The company also announced plans to establish a car production plant in Port Qasim, Karachi, in partnership with Mega Motors, a subsidiary of The Hub Power Company Limited (HUBCO). This facility is projected to be completed in the first half of 2026.
The successful handling of this shipment at KPT sets the stage for further imports of electric vehicles.
