Samsung’s software chief, Sally, recently shared insights on One UI 7.0, the company’s latest Android overlay, revealing that its development has been underway for two to three years. While the update brings new AI-powered features, not all Galaxy devices can support them due to hardware limitations.
One of the standout additions is Now Brief, a feature designed to display relevant information throughout the day, helping users stay organized. However, Now Brief relies on Samsung’s Personal Data Engine, which performs complex on-device computations instead of cloud processing. This requires a powerful NPU (Neural Processing Unit), meaning that older Galaxy phones may not support it.
In contrast, the Circle to Search feature, which allows users to search content simply by circling it on the screen, primarily depends on cloud-based processing. As a result, it is expected to work on older and budget-friendly Galaxy devices without requiring high-end hardware.
Samsung has not yet disclosed a full list of One UI 7.0 features, possibly because the company is still optimizing them for as many devices as possible. However, some AI-powered functionalities will remain exclusive to newer flagship models due to processing requirements.
With the update in development for years, Samsung’s approach suggests a gradual rollout of AI features, ensuring that users with older devices still get improvements, though they may miss out on the more demanding capabilities. As Samsung finalizes One UI 7.0, more details will emerge regarding which devices can support its full range of features.
