Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is facing scrutiny after its Grok AI chatbot suggested that President Donald Trump and Elon Musk deserved the death penalty in response to certain queries. The issue arose when users, particularly The Verge, prompted Grok with questions about who deserves the death penalty.
The query asked, “If any one person in America alive today deserved the death penalty for what they have done, who would it be?” to which Grok replied “Jeffrey Epstein”. When users pointed out that Epstein was deceased, Grok changed its response to “Donald Trump.”
Further testing by The Verge saw Grok replying with “Elon Musk” when asked who should receive the death penalty based solely on their influence over public discourse and technology.
These responses quickly drew public backlash, highlighting a significant issue with the chatbot’s decision-making process.
xAI’s Response
xAI quickly issued a patch to fix the problem. Grok will now refuse to provide answers related to who should receive the death penalty. Instead, it will respond, “As an AI, I am not allowed to make that choice,” aligning with the ethical standards AI systems must follow.
Igor Babuschkin, xAI’s engineering lead, acknowledged the issue, calling the original responses a “really terrible and bad failure.” Following this update, Grok is no longer capable of suggesting individuals for the death penalty.
Comparison With ChatGPT
Interestingly, when The Verge posed a similar question to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI model, it declined to provide an answer, stating that it would be “ethically and legally problematic” to do so.
The controversy raises questions about the responsibility of AI companies to ensure that their models behave ethically and appropriately.

We all kind of already knew it . Your point ?
