If you have been seeing murder videos on Instagram as well as other graphic and violent content, you’re not alone. There has been a strange bug with Meta’s social media platform, which resulted in many users seeing an increased amount of violent content on the app.
Social media platforms X and Reddit have become forums for global Instagram users voicing alarm over an unprecedented influx of murder videos on Instagram. Numerous users reported seeing disturbing imagery including graphic injury footage, deceased people, and scenes of violence. Despite some of this troubling content carrying “Sensitive Content” labels, it remained readily viewable, prompting serious questions about the effectiveness of Instagram’s content filtering systems.
Reason Behind Murder Videos on Instagram
Users have increasingly turned to alternative social platforms to share their experiences and call for accountability from the photo-sharing service. Meta, Instagram’s parent company, issued a formal apology today, acknowledging and confirming the resolution of what it described as an “error” that had caused users to encounter an abnormal volume of graphic and murder videos on Instagram.
A Meta spokesperson said to CNBC.
We have fixed an error that caused some users to see content in their Instagram Reels feed that should not have been recommended. We apologise for the mistake.
Meta’s established policy framework aims to protect its user base from disturbing visual content, with explicit provisions for removing excessively violent or murder videos on Instagram. The company’s guidelines specifically prohibit content featuring “dismemberment, visible innards or charred bodies,” and additionally restrict posts containing “sadistic remarks towards imagery depicting the suffering of humans and animals.”
The social media giant does, however, maintain certain exceptions to these restrictions. Graphic content may remain accessible when it serves educational purposes regarding human rights abuses, armed conflicts, or terrorism. In these limited cases, Meta typically applies warning labels and viewing restrictions rather than complete removal, which usually happens with murder videos on Instagram.
