Pakistan’s democracy ranking fell by six spots in 2024, placing it among the “top 10 worst performers” in the Democracy Index released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The country ranked 124th globally with a score of 2.84, categorising it as an “authoritarian regime.”
The Democracy Index assessed 165 states and two territories based on electoral process, government functioning, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties. The report found a global decline in democracy, with authoritarian regimes becoming even more restrictive.
It stated that over 39% of the world’s population now lives under authoritarian rule, a figure that continues to rise. Pakistan, along with Bangladesh and South Korea, was highlighted for its significant democratic decline.
The report noted that while over 70 countries held elections in 2023, many, including Pakistan, faced allegations of rigging and political interference. It also pointed out challenges such as electoral manipulation and political unrest in South Asian nations, warning that democracy in the region remains uncertain.
The EIU’s Director for the Democracy Index, Joan Hoey, remarked that while authoritarian regimes are tightening control, democracies worldwide are struggling. The report stressed that future progress depends on civil society’s ability to push for reforms and political institutions’ willingness to adopt greater inclusivity.
